Some years ago, I took an introductory course to Riding for the Disabled and began working with a blind child together with the South African Riding for the Disabled. It was very beautiful to watch certain autistic signs this child had developed due to lack of stimulation dissipate as he opened up to a relationship with the horse.
In the video clip below, a father shares of his experience with his autistic child when he introduced his child to horse riding.
Therapeutic Riding can be used for many varied diagnoses. Autism is one of them, we hope another time to share some others. If you have had some experience with Therapeutic Riding or Hippotherapy or with Pet Therapy, do let us know. What did you enjoy. What did you learn. How did working with the animals help you or your loved one to function more effectively?
