Derek Paravicini Demonstrates incredible Talent

I love to see the talent of so called special needs people. There is often debate as to whether a very premature baby can be able to function effectively. Enjoy the video below of Derek Paravicini, he might have been born 3 months premature but listen to his music?

For anyone who has a premature baby, let the video give you strength and encouragement that everyone has something to contribute. You can focus on the difficulties this person has or enjoy his talent. This really is the choice we all face daily in every task we are involved in. When it comes to our children, though we need to know the difficulties in order to help them to function more effectively, re-inforcing and encouraging their strong points are very important.

- Where do you enjoy working most? Indoors or outdoors? Do you have a specific room or space in your home where you can work? Do you need to create a space to work? Write down your ideal work environment. Remember to include such details as whether sound / noise, light, people etc help you or making working from home difficult for you.

- What do you need practically or physically in order work from home? This can be time, space, appropriate desk, computer, specific software. List all the details as it will become useful shortly.

Identify your Skills and Interests in order to Work from Home

In our first step in the process towards working from home, I discussed the need to record your process. Once you have your method of documenting your process you can begin with your stock take. Why will this be important? Life is short and as human beings, our time is limited. As a result, you need to focus your energies on the type of work you will enjoy that will bring in the kind of income that will meet your needs. In order to know what you can and can not do, what you enjoy, what your goals are and more, you will need some introspection and to list certain details which I call a stock take. This will help towards finding a suitable niche for yourself and to focus your energy effectively.

Step number one will be to list your skills and qualifications (if you have), within this list divide a page into two or have two separate pages to list all those tasks related to your profession or other skills that you enjoy doing and do well and those you are not prepared to do. e.g. if you are good at writing or editing, make a record as to what type of writing you can do or would like to do and what kind you are not prepared to or do not enjoy. Brain storm all of your skills, even your hobbies, it sometimes happens that a hobby can be turned into a money generating job.

Next you will make a list of those tasks, jobs etc that you do not like and are not prepared to do.

Once you have both of these recorded in your journal of your process, come back for the next step of your personal stock take.

If you are stuck and unsure about your interests, be in touch for a session to help you to identify this important part of who you are.

Have a blessed day and remember to come back for the next stage of preparing to work from home.

Concerning Information about Women's Hygiene Products

One area of interest in healthcare in general and in occupational therapy in particular is that of health and wellness and especially women's health. This morning I noticed an article that a friend posted about research carried out in Argentina that shows that 85% of tampons, sanitary towels, sterile cotton contains a harmful product named glyphosate which is used in certain pesticides. This concerned me so I began to do a google search and found quite a few articles on the toxins and problems of products used for women's hygiene.

In an article on feminine hygiene products written in May 2013 one can find more details than the one listed this morning. As the second article points out, women's hygiene products typically do not list all of the ingredients as the companies regard them as medical devices. Personally, I do not see how the category determines what is listed as contents. To read the information is quite frightening. This second article explains how it can be that a pesticide can become part of women's hygiene products, it sounds as though the cause is from the cotton being sprayed with pesticides prior to being turned into the fabric or material that reaches the consumer as a range of hygiene products

It makes me wonder once again, what are we doing to our planet and to the people who inhabit it. It is enough that we have not managed to master human relations, we are harming innocent people by selling products that contain harmful ingredients. What is the answer? Altering our goals and lifestyle would be a great start.

The article of 2013 has a petition one can sign to demand that women are informed of the ingredients that goes into the products we use.

What are the potential consequences to our health? The products listed have all kinds of harmful side effects, Alzheimers, Cancer, effects to ones hormones and immune system which can have effects on ones fertility to name but a few. Toxic Shock is obviously a major one too.

It seems that more and more, the decision of choice needs to be natural organic products. These often come with a higher price tag which is what pushes us into work related issues in an attempt to earn enough to stay health.

The modern age has certainly created many harmful side effects. It's time to move towards sustainability of health rather than creation of illness.

Have you heard of these issues before? Do a google search and find several articles stating the same frightening information. What can we do? Become informed to begin with. Demand all the ingredients are listed on the products. Refuse to purchase anything with harmful ingredients. If the items are not being purchased the manufacturers will have to come up with an alternative. If you learn what to use as a safe alternative, please share in the comments below so that other women can learn too.

Wishing you a blessed day, filled with good health.

Identical Twins, Is Indepence Possible

Being able to live independently is a goal of occupational therapy. What do you do when you are identical to someone else? How well do you know twins? Ever seen complete identical twins?

This video is fascinating on many levels. I hope you enjoy it and would love to hear your thoughts.

Fifth Book Review on Amazon

Time to share another book review of our book "Tuvia Finds His Freedom."
"What a lovely little gem reflecting the true story of compassion for animals. There are of course many organizations devoted to this cause. But this little book helps to bring out the need to recognize that animals too have feelings and rights, and that just a little effort on one's part to alleviate the suffering of a little creature can bring sufficient reward to justify the expression of this action for public distribution. The book is well-written, with well-photographed descriptive illustrations of the real Tuvia. It is easy to understand by even younger children and its length allows it to be read to a child over just a few "bedtime story" sessions. It can easily be read by an adult in an hour or two, and is well worth the effort. Sometimes we, too, need to be reminded of our obligation to extend our compassion to those little creatures who find themselves in unfortunate circumstances.

For these reasons I have no hesitation in awarding it a 5 star rating, and hope that the inspiration gained by the authors in performing this deed of kindness and sharing it with us will encourage them to maybe produce more books like this in similar vein, albeit fictional." - (Stan)
"Tuvia Finds His Freedom" Written and Photographed by Eliyahu and Shoshanah Shear is available on,,, BookDepository, eStore of CreateSpace. Ask for it in your local book store, you might just find it there too. If not, you can show them this review and encourage them to sell the book.

Step Number One in Preparing to Work from Home

Yesterday, I began a series of posts on the topic of working from home. If you find yourself needing or wanting to work from home, the best way to become successful is to work smartly. That means begin by doing a stock take, preparing and planning so as to develop a plan that will help you to reach your goals. There are a number of facts you will need to write down as part of your stock take. So step number one is to decide whether you would like this process to be physically in a tangible book or folder or to keep a record on the computer or a combination. Your decision might depend on whether you have any disabilities or limitations, e.g. someone who is blind or quadriplegic will need to use a computer or adaptive technology / equipment.

Once you have decided which method you will be using, we can get started. If you have a new blank book to use as a work book or a folder that you can insert pages into then take it out and label it as being your workbook for this process. If you prefer to keep your record online, open a word document and save it with a title suitable for this process. If you wish to use a combination or to work in a book / journal / folder but lack the appropriate stationary, your first step will be to go out and purchase what you need. If you need the funds for this, then we need to work out what the cost will be and how you can obtain it.

Your homework now will be to make sure you have a notebook, folder, scrapbook or document on your computer in order to begin your stock taking. Prepare what you need to keep your record and come back for the next step in doing your stock take.

Work from Home

The area of work has always been a fascination to me and of great interest. As an occupational therapist, one important aspect of OT intervention in the area of work is the knowledge that enabling someone to be independent in earning an income that meets their needs empowers the person to live. When I was at university, in the introduction to Life Skills training, the lecturer shared the idea "give a person a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a person to fish and you feed him for life".

Living a meaningful and healthy life costs in other words it requires money. How do we acquire money? The normal way of the world is to work. A large percentage go out to find a salaried job, but what happens when circumstances make earning in a salaried job difficult or impossible. It could be due to an illness, it could be due to economy resulting in cutbacks, it could be you were fired or moved cities or had a child or politics changed. There are any number of reasons why someone might find the need to work from home.

The wisest way to begin working from home is to have a stable income and begin exploring your options while you have some income coming in. We can take a look at a few options for this in another post.

What I would like to address, is what one can do if you find yourself suddenly at home, needing to work from home without the luxury of an income coming in. Where do you turn? What are your options? How can you transition from the real and scary situation of having a need for income and a need to work from home without the cash flow to make that happen.

Have you experienced this situation? Please share your experience, I'd love to hear what lead to you working from home. What have you tried and what are you finding works for you? Do you have goals? Do you have dreams?

I invite you to join me on a journey to discover the answers to these questions. I look forward to sharing many ideas, some of which I have tested and can share what what I have discovered from them, some I am still to explore.

If you are reading this post out of a need to increase your income by working from home, I hope you will find some support, tips and guidance in these posts.

If you are living in Israel and have a need for some assistance, do be in touch to make an appointment for a consultation.

Have a blessed day

What can You do with Lemons?

When life throws you challenges what do you do? Many love to quote "When life gives you lemons make lemonade "

What do you do if you do not like lemonade or do not know how to make it. Is this really your only option?

Let us take a look. What can you do with lemons?

Well you can add some other citrus fruit and make jam (jelly) or marmalade.

You can sell the lemons and use the money for whatever you need.

You can sell some of the lemons and purchase some other fruits and work towards starting a fruit store.

You can use the lemons to season all kinds of dishes: salads, fish, salad dressings are a few ideas.

You can squeeze the lemons and make ice cubes with the lemon juice which is very refreshing in a glass of water.

You can say thank you and enjoy the lemons.

You can sit down and do a Google search on all the options of how to use lemons and decide if there are ideas I have not come up with.

You can photograph the lemons individually, as a group, cut them open and come up with as many unusually images that you can. Like wise you can draw the lemons in various different combinations.

You can cut the lemons into quarters, place them at various places in your home and it will absorb unpleasant odours.

There might be many more options of what to do with lemons. The point is to consider that lemons are good. There are benefits to lemons and even if you had not expected lemons there are ways you can use lemons for good and to create good in your life.

What are your thoughts. Do you like lemons? What do you like about them? What goals would you have to meet if you suddenly found you had a load of lemons?

What symbolism can you assign to lemons?

I'd love to hear your thoughts, so please share your comment at the end of the post.

The Benefit of Rear-view Mirrors

I was talking recently to someone about rear-view mirrors. Have you ever stopped to think about the need, value and benefit of rear view mirrors. In the image above, we see a wing / side mirror and though in this picture it is being used to see a reflection, usually wing / side mirrors and rear view mirrors are both crucial for safe driving. If one is driving, an advanced driver or one concerned about safety will be checking the rear view mirror and wing mirrors every 5 - 10 seconds. This does not mean you are ignoring what is in front of you, it means that you are making sure to be aware of what is happening around you at all times.

What are the situations where this is necessary, or what will you benefit from checking so often?

Let us take a few examples: Firstly, you can see if there is anyone behind you or anyone wanting to pull out and overtake you. If you need to slow down e.g. to maneuver around something in your path, knowing if there is something / someone behind you will help you to adjust your speed effectively so as to prevent any problems. Regularly checking your rear view and side mirrors helps you to know if a car that was behind you might have gone into your blind spot or if there is anything unusual happening.

If you need to stop, park, do a U-turn or a 3point turn, your mirrors are going to become vital to navigating each of these correctly, effectively and safely.

Checking your rear view mirror can of course also be a symbol for traveling the path of life. In Ethihcs of our Fathers (Pirkei Avot) we are taught to know from where you are coming and to where you are going to... (Chapter 3:1) The reason for this is that it helps to keep you humble, to focus your path in life and to protect you from sin. Let us look at this idea a little more.

If you have a goal or dream or business you are working on or towards, it is recommended to sit down regularly to reflect on where you have come from, what you have achieved, what you might need to adjust or alter and how you are doing compared to where you aim to get to. Did the events of the past hour, few hours, day, week, month, year etc help you to come closer to your goal or did they cause an issue that has taken you away from your goal.

Just as a safe driver has to constantly be checking his / her mirrors, so too, anyone who wishes to be successful in life should be constantly reflecting on where they have come from, what they have accomplished, been through, people they have met, events that have transpired etc to help them to focus their efforts effectively. Without regularly reflecting in the appropriate manner, a person can end up either repeating the same mistakes repeatedly without realizing where the error is, or waste time, resources etc. Life is about growth, and knowing where and how you are growing, developing and achieving is dependent on whether you are measuring your efforts correctly. Just as a parent can not know how much a child is developing and whether this development is normal and healthy or requires assistance to improve unless they keep a record of significant milestones, so too, a person can not know how they are progressing unless they spend time keeping a record and regularly checking that progress. Part of this analysis requires reflecting on where they have come from and where they are going to. If we are really dedicated to be successful, then the rest of the teaching of Pirkei Avot is important, namely to remember that we will all have to give an accounting to our Creator. This helps us to stay focused on what is important in life and on whether our goals are in keeping with His goals.

What are your thoughts on the benefits of reflecting as an opportunity to re-focus effectively and to navigate your path in life safely? We'd love to hear your ideas.

If you are in Israel and require assistance in setting goals for the coming year or in adjusting your goals effectively or reflecting appropriately, do be in touch for an appointment.
